Mental health in the workplace
The tide is turning around mental health at work with a growing understanding of the benefits of investing in building mentally healthy workplaces where people can thrive and be their best.
On 17 January 2019 MPs debated Mental Health First Aid in the workplace with strong support for making changes to put first aid for mental health on a par with that for physical health.
Simon Blake, CEO for Mental Health First Aid England said
“The government has made some clear commitments to achieving parity of esteem for mental health, a vision that we and many other mental health organisations share. Updating the current first aid regulations to include mental health would move us one step closer to achieving this equality and we believe that it really is a case of when, not if, this change in law will happen."
Supporting organisations build mentally healthy workplaces
I offer organisations my training and expertise as a psychotherapist plus first hand experience of implementing a ground-breaking mental health programme in the world's largest professional services firm. I have developed an outstanding network across organisations including Mind, Samaritans, Business in the Community, The Lord Mayor's Appeal, West Midlands Combined Authority and am able to support organisations to source safe, effective and often free/very low cost resources to help them transform their strategy for mental health into a reality.
My overall approach is to partner organisations, connecting them with free/low cost external resources and tailoring simple, practical, effective solutions. Typically a good approach will have 3 elements:
- Awareness raising by getting people interested and committed to making some changes
- Engaging people emotionally through positive role models and story telling
- Train and educating leaders and staff in MHFA thus building confidence and competence to intervene safely and effectively
- Reviewing HR processes through a mental health lens
